Welcome to “Out on a Limb!” We have put together this brief guide to tell you a little about our house and the activities in the Idyllwild area.

The House, it’s Features & Furnishings:

“Out on a Limb!” is a 2,700 sq. ft., completely furnished, 2 story home with loft and 900 sq. ft. of outdoor decking. This cedar clad home is well insulated and heated but is not air-conditioned. It has a state-of-the-art security system and 3 telephones available for local service, out-bound, credit card long distance calls and in-bound long distance calls paid by caller.

You enter the main 1,000 sq. ft. living level from a wooden entry bridge through a canopy of live oaks. The main level features a vaulted, 19 ft. high cedar ceiling, a gourmet kitchen with center island, a large living room with a wood-burning fireplace, a 2 story library with library ladder, TV, DVD, VHS, and a stereo. The main floor also features leather furniture, a large dining room with a custom pine table that seats 8, a kitchen bar that seats 5, and a powder room w/a shower.

The main level has a continuous deck with exterior seating, propane BBQ & and outdoor dining area off kitchen, and a spectacular 180-degree view of Mt. Baldy, Big Bear, San Gorgonio to Black Mountain and Marion Ridge. This entire level is 100% accessible to disabled individuals in wheelchairs.

The 500 sq. ft. loft is open to the main level and is furnished with a queen futon and can also accommodate children with sleeping bags in the “cave” under the raised “Crow’s Nest” study area.

The 1,000 sq. ft. lower level has 2 baths and 3 bedrooms including a large master suite with a queen bed. The master suite features a TV, fireplace, a walk-in closet, a huge bath with Jacuzzi tub for 2 and a shower with a forest view. The second and third bedrooms have a queen size bed and twin beds consecutively. They share a full bath. Each bedroom has dressers, ample closet space and private balconies.

Rental Policy:

“Out on a Limb!” is available year–round as a vacation rental by the weekend, week or month or for small seminars or conferences. It can sleep up to 8 people comfortably and easily accommodate 2 families. No pets are allowed. No smoking is allowed. We ask our guests to please respect our No street shoes policy in our home. We provide a bench and shoe rack in the entry hall for your convenience.

Please call Idyllwild Mountain Realty at (951) 659-4444 for availability, current rates and reservations. A refundable security deposit is required.

As in most house rentals, you will need to bring your own bed sheets, towels and paper products, food and firewood. Please leave the house in a clean & tidy condition. Housekeeping is $20 per hour. To vacuum, and dust the house, plus clean 3 bathrooms and the kitchen normally takes housekeeping 3 hours after weekend occupancy.

House Rules:

We hope you enjoy your stay and ask that you treat our home as if it were your own. We apologize for the following list of house rules, but want to insure that you have a safe and comfortable stay.

We would appreciate it if you would kindly leave your shoes in the entryway while you are in the house.

When using the fireplace, please ALWAYS close the screen and the glass doors. There are no gas starters. The chimney dampers in both fireplaces are left in an open position and the fireplaces are ready for use. Please do not adjust or close the chimney dampers. Do not clean out the fireplace ashes under any circumstances. When using the living room fireplace you must keep the master bedroom door closed to prevent smoke from accumulating in the bedroom and setting off the fire alarm!

There are 2 furnaces and thermostats to heat the house, one for each level. During the winter, please leave the lower furnace ‘on’ at all times with the thermostat set at 50 degrees upon leaving, which prevents the water pipes from freezing.

We would appreciate your efforts to conserve energy and water. As a courtesy we ask that you turn down the heat and turn off the lights at night or when you go out.

Please be careful when using the library ladder. Adults only please.

Very important – Please only turn on the Jacuzzi when the water level is at least 3 inches above the jets on the side of the tub. You can turn the Jacuzzi on & off by pressing the chrome button on the back of the tub. The force of the jets can be adjusted
by turning the two chrome knobs on the back of the tub. Also do not overfill – please allow for your body (ies) volume and avoid over-flow.

Please do not tamper with the security system at all. Please do not smoke in the house and do not throw any smoking material off the decks. Please do not climb on the loft or
deck guardrails.

Important (For Weekly & Monthly Guests) If you use the washing machine, please make sure that you are there when the washer is going through the spin cycle and also make sure the laundry door is fully open. The washer tends to move around a lot during spin cycle especially if the load is not evenly distributed and you can be shut out.

Children Safety Note:

Please do not ever let children use or play on the library ladder or climb on the guardrails in the loft or on the decks. Also, do not let children climb on the rock retaining walls around the base of the house.

Although the trees and rocks around the house are great for climbing, they can be slippery and dangerous. When sledding or tubing in the snow, please be very careful. Climb or sled at your own risk. Also, when walking in the winter, please remember to give cars a wide berth especially during icy conditions.

Getting to Pine Cove:

“Out on a Limb!” is located at 53025 Cedar Crest Drive in Pine Cove approximately 3 miles from downtown Idyllwild and about ½ mile from Hwy 243. Refer to our enclosed courtesy map.

Climate and Attire:

As in any mountain area, the weather is unpredictable. Pine Cove does get snow in the winter, usually from about late November until early April, but usually in small accumulations. “Out on a Limb!” is located on a level, paved road, which we do have plowed in the winter. The roads are generally accessible year-round, but can be icy in the winter. Please drive carefully and be sure to carry tire chains or have 4WD in the winter.
There is ample, off-street parking available on-site.

Please note that the elevation in Pine Cove is approximately 6,200 feet or about 1000 ft. higher than Idyllwild. Summer temperatures are usually in the 70’s during the day, but can drop into the 40’s or 50’s at night. A sweater, light jacket and good walking shoes are advisable. Winter temperatures are usually in the high 30’s or 40’s during the day, but can drop well below freezing at night. Boots, thermal underwear, a warm coat, gloves and a warm hat are a must. Dressing in layers is recommended even indoors.

What you need to Bring:

You will need to bring your own sheets, towels, paper products, food, firewood, CD’s, DVD’s, VHS’, hiking shoes sleds, etc. A sweater and light jacket are also advisable even in the summer.

Activities:

Idyllwild is a year-round family oriented resort area. The prime activities in Idyllwild are walking & hiking. Everybody seems to walk everywhere. Eating & relaxing are close 2nds & 3rds.

You can take a short local walk around Cedar Crest Drive onto Oak Glen & back to Cedar Crest. This short loop is flat, about ½ mile in length and takes about 15 minutes.
Or, walk down to the Pine Cove Market at the Shell station for some goodies or a video. Once you park in downtown Idyllwild, almost all the restaurants, shops and art galleries are within walking distance.

There are numerous hiking trails in Idyllwild ranging in degree of difficulty from very easy to very strenuous. Some trails require permits. Consult with the local office of the U.S. Forest Service on the corner of Hwy 243 & Pinecrest Ave. Another good easy hike is the nature trail next to the County Visitor’s Center off Hwy 243.

Idyllwild Arts Academy has frequent musical, art exhibitions and other performing arts events year round. This world famous high school attracts talented faculty and students from around the globe.

There are special activities many weekends (mostly in the summer) that are sponsored by the local service clubs. Check the local newspaper, The Town Crier for details and look for signs in the downtown area.

Fishing is generally good at Lake Hemet, which is approximately 12 miles southwest of Pine Cove, just off Hwy 74 in Garner Valley (Mountain Center) or at Lake Fulmor, about 10 miles north toward Banning on Hwy 243.

In the winter there is cross-country skiing available locally (bring your own skis) but there are no downhill ski runs. Snow sledding is a local favorite and, depending on snow conditions, can be experienced just east of the house or in Humber Park.

There is a good little theater in downtown Idyllwild that has first release movies. There are also 4 DVD/Video rentals, one at the Pine Cove Market, one at the Rustic Theatre, one in the Strawberry Creek shopping center and one on Hwy 243 across from the Shell station.

Shopping and browsing are favorite pastimes in Idyllwild. There are a lot of interesting shops and galleries in the downtown area and up North Circle Drive. In addition, there are 2 grocery stores – Fairway Market in the Strawberry Creek shopping center and Village Market on Hwy 243 in the heart of town.

A COPY OF THE CURRENT IDYLLWILD VISITOR’S GUIDE WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE HOUSE UPON YOUR ARRIVAL. FEEL FREE TO TAKE THIS PUBLICATION HOME WITH YOU.
